What Bali Taught Me About Gratitude & Presence
It’s been just over a week since I returned home from Bali.
The suitcases are unpacked. I’m back at the studio, back to teaching, and back to the familiar rhythm of home. But part of me is still there—in the quiet mornings, the daily offerings, the sounds of nature, and the reminder to slow down enough to truly notice the moment I’m in.
So instead of a traditional retreat recap, I wanted to share something a little different.
Think of this as a page from my Bali journal—a reflection on what Bali taught me, what I hope to carry forward, and an invitation to bring a little of Bali home with you, too.
The Beauty of the Pause
One of the things that touched me most in Bali was how intentionally each day begins.
Before work. Before responsibilities. Before the rush of the day—there is a pause.
Everywhere we went, we saw small handmade offerings filled with flowers and incense, placed in front of homes, temples, shops, and along the streets. At first, I simply noticed their beauty. But as the days passed, I began to notice something deeper:
Gratitude wasn’t something saved for special moments. It was woven into everyday life.
There was something so beautiful about that.
It reminded me that healing isn’t always something we have to chase or search for somewhere outside ourselves. Sometimes, we create it through the smallest rituals—a mindful breath, a moment of gratitude, a flower placed with intention, a meal shared slowly, or a conversation where no one is looking at the clock.
Of everything I experienced in Bali, this is one of the feelings I don’t want to lose.

Beginning Each Day Together
During our retreat, we also created our own morning ritual.
We gathered for yoga, meditation, and breathwork. Some mornings our bodies needed movement. Other mornings called for something slower and quieter. But each practice gave us an opportunity to arrive—not only on our mats, but in the day ahead.
We breathed together. We moved together. We sat in stillness together.
And throughout our week, these words became part of our practice:
With every breath, I return to myself.
With every step, I walk with gratitude.
With every moment, I choose presence.
I trust the unfolding of this journey.
At the beginning of the retreat, they were simply words we practiced together.
By the end of the week, they felt different.
We had walked through rice fields, experienced Balinese traditions and ceremonies, visited sacred places, tried new foods, explored, laughed, rested, shared meals, and opened ourselves to a culture and rhythm of life different from our own.
And perhaps most importantly, we had spent time being present with one another.
There was no need to rush to the next thing. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happened around the table, on the ride somewhere, during a quiet morning practice, or in the conversations in between everything we had planned.
The People Become Part of the Journey
One of my favorite parts of leading a retreat is watching a group of people arrive as individuals and slowly begin to connect.
Over the course of our week, I watched conversations deepen. I saw people looking out for one another, sharing experiences, taking photos for each other, laughing over meals, trying something new, and becoming more comfortable simply being together.
After our trip, one participant shared with the group how wonderful it had been to experience the journey together, to get to know everyone, and to know that the memories we created would stay with us forever.
Another shared how blessed she felt to have met everyone and lived this amazing experience together.
Those messages touched my heart because they captured something photographs can’t fully show.
Yes, Bali was beautiful.
But what made the week truly special was how we experienced it together.
The openness. The kindness. The conversations. The laughter. The willingness to experience another culture. The moments of quiet. And the feeling that, little by little, our hearts were becoming closer.
Those are the memories I will carry with me.
Bringing Bali Home
Now that I’m home, I keep thinking about one question:
How do we hold onto that feeling when ordinary life begins again?
We have schedules. Work. School. Emails. Appointments. Laundry. Responsibilities. Phones that start asking for our attention the moment we wake up.
We cannot live every day as though we are on retreat.
But perhaps that isn’t the lesson.
Maybe the lesson is learning that we don’t need to escape our everyday lives to experience presence.
We can create small pauses within them.
Take one mindful breath before reaching for the phone in the morning.
Light a candle before dinner.
Step outside and notice the sky.
Sit quietly for one minute before beginning the next task.
Look at someone you love while they’re speaking and really listen.
Place a hand over your heart and simply notice: I am here.
These practices may seem small. But Bali reminded me that small rituals, repeated with intention, can change the way we experience our days.
We may not be able to slow down the world around us.
But we can choose to slow down enough to experience our own lives.
Bali Is in Our Hearts
When I think about Bali now, I don’t only think about a destination.
I think about a feeling.
A place inside us where the breath becomes a little slower. Where gratitude becomes a little easier. Where we stop thinking about where we need to go next and allow ourselves to be where we are.
For those who traveled with me, I hope Bali will always hold a special place in our hearts. I hope years from now, a scent, a flower, a sound, or even one deep breath will bring us back to those mornings together.
And for those of you reading this who weren’t physically there with us, I hope you know that this part of the journey belongs to you, too.
You don’t need to travel across the world to create a sacred morning.
You don’t need a retreat to practice gratitude.
And you don’t need to be in Bali to pause, breathe, and come home to yourself.
Maybe Bali is also that special place within each of us—the place we can return to when we breathe, become present, and allow ourselves to feel peace.
So today, wherever you are, take one breath with me.
Inhale slowly.
Exhale completely.
And remember:
With every breath, I return to myself.
With every step, I walk with gratitude.
With every moment, I choose presence.
I trust the unfolding of this journey.
You didn’t have to be in Bali to experience its wisdom. Sometimes all it takes is one mindful breath.
Bali is in our hearts. And perhaps, whenever we choose to slow down and become fully present, a little piece of it is right here with us.
With gratitude,
Cici
